Two-Wheelers Banned on Bengaluru-Chennai Expressway After Fatal Accident
In a major safety move, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has officially banned the entry of two-wheelers on the new Bengaluru-Chennai expressway following a tragic accident that claimed four lives. The accident, which occurred in Bangarpet taluk, Kolar district, involved a two-wheeler entering the expressway from the wrong side and colliding with a four-wheeler, highlighting the risks associated with high-speed roads and slow-moving vehicles.
NHAI’s Response: Safety Comes First
Reacting swiftly to the incident, NHAI has instructed patrolling teams to strictly prohibit two-wheelers from entering the expressway. To reinforce the rule, signboards will be installed at entry and exit gates, ensuring bikers do not accidentally or deliberately enter the high-speed corridor.
An NHAI official stated:
“Entry of bikes is barred on expressways across India. This road is designed for speeds up to 120 kmph, making it extremely unsafe for two-wheelers. We urge bikers to avoid this stretch for their safety and that of other road users.”
The Need for a Two-Wheeler Ban
Expressways are controlled-access highways designed for high-speed travel, with limited entry and exit points. Unlike regular highways, these roads are not meant for slow-moving vehicles like two-wheelers, autos, and tractors, as the speed differential creates a high risk of collisions.
Many bikers had started using the Bengaluru-Chennai expressway after its unofficial opening, seeking a new riding experience. However, this tragic incident has underlined the importance of adhering to road safety rules and avoiding routes that are not designed for motorcycles.
The Road Ahead
With the expressway now officially barring two-wheelers, NHAI and local authorities will focus on enforcing the ban strictly. Signage, patrol teams, and awareness campaigns will play a crucial role in ensuring compliance.
For bikers, this is a strong reminder to prioritize safety over thrill and use alternative roads suited for two-wheelers. While expressways offer faster connectivity, they are not meant for vehicles that cannot match the speeds of other traffic.
Final Thoughts
This ban is a necessary step to prevent future accidents and safeguard lives. While it may inconvenience some riders, safety must always come first. As India’s expressway network grows, awareness and compliance with road regulations will be essential to ensure smooth and accident-free travel for all.
