Truck drivers in Karnataka will go on strike indefinitely beginning January 17, according to the Federation of Karnataka Lorry Owners’ Association on Saturday. The walkout is in response to the new Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS)’s harsh legislation for hit-and-run cases.

“Though the union government called us for discussions on this unruly law, the officials have not given anything in writing,” C Naveen Reddy, head of the Federation of Karnataka Lorry Owners’ Association, told reporters. The union government made this choice unilaterally, and they did not consult with us before making such a hurried move.”

Reddy further stated that all truck drivers in the state will support the strike by staying off the road. “We have already notified all truck drivers in the state that we will be going on strike.” “From January 17, all heavy vehicles will be off-road,” he continued.

Truck drivers, taxi and bus drivers have begun a statewide strike in protest of the newly approved Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which includes a 27 lakh fine and a 10-year prison sentence for hit-and-run offenses. According to the All-India Motor Transport Congress, these laws, which have yet to take effect, can cause undue harassment and must be repealed immediately.

However, on January 2, the All India Motor Transport Association (AIMTC) announced that the nationwide trucking service would be discontinued.
