Woman arrested in honey trap case in Dakshina Kannada | Mangaluru News – Times of India

MANGALURU: Dakshina Kannada district arrested a 23-year-old woman for extortion and cheating. The accused is from Bantwal taluk.
She was arrested on July 2 and produced before a court.
Dakshina Kannada superintendent of police Rishikesh Sonawane said that about five months ago, complainant Abdul Nasir received a WhatsApp message saying “Hi”. He responded by asking “Who are you?”, in response, he received a message, “sorry wrong number”. Almost 12 days after he received the first message, he receives another “hi”, to which the complainant responded with “hi”. He then called on that number and a woman introduced herself in Hindi as Tanisha from Mangaluru. From then on they kept in touch through calls and WhatsApp messages.
The complainant told the police that on April 15, the accused asked him to make a video call on WhatsApp. After an alleged ‘intimate’ video call conversation, she blocked him on WhatsApp and stopped receiving his calls. On April 20, Abdul Nasir was called to a secluded place. On reaching there, he found a group of people which included Sayyed Monu, Abdul Kunhi, Shafi, Nasir and Azhar. They accused him of cheating the girl and threatened that they would release the video of his chat with the woman on social media if he failed to pay Rs 30 lakh. They then deleted the conversation with the woman from his mobile phone.
The complainant handed over Rs 25 lakh and another Rs 5 lakh to the accused, who threatened him not to inform the police. A case was registered on June 30 under IPC sections 384 (extortion), 420 (cheating), 120(b) criminal conspiracy, 506 (criminal intimidation) and section 66 of IT Act. The police are on the lookout for other accused in the case.
The complainant was targeted because he hailed from a well-to-do family and had worked abroad, the SP said, asking people to be cautious when sharing explicit content on social media.
