UDUPI: The principal district and sessions’ court in Karnataka’s Udupi on Wednesday found a 44-year-old man guilty of hacking his wife and mother-in-law to death at Kasturba Nagar in Chitpady on April 20, 2015.
The accused Sanjay Kumar Datta, hailing from Assam, had attacked Nirmala, his mother-in-law, and wife, Archana, with a sickle.
While Nirmala succumbed to her injuries in the courtyard of their neighbour, Archana passed away at a hospital the next day.
Datta, who was residing at Chitpady of 76 Badagabettu village in Udupi taluk, worked as a manager at a factory in Baikampady.
He frequently quarrelled with his wife suspecting her character.
On the fateful night, when the two fought and Nirmala tried to intervene, the accused attacked her with a sickle that was in the house.
Later, when he dragged Archana outside the house, Nirmala again tried to stop him and he attacked both with the sickle.
The duo ran to the house of Srinivas, a neighbour and an eyewitness to escape his wrath.
The accused went there and attacked Nirmala on the left side of her neck.
When Archana tried to intervene, he attacked her and inflicted a deep wound on the right side of her back.
While Nirmala died on the door steps of Srinivas’ houses, Archana who was rushed to a private hospital for treatment in Manipal passed away there the next day.
Shanti Bai, senior district public prosecutor, said Subrahmanya J N, principal district and sessions court judge who heard testimonies of 25 of the 44 witnesses, upheld the accusation laid out against Datta in the charge sheet that then Udupi Circle Police Inspector Srikanth K had filed.
The court has reserved the quantum of punishment under sections 302 and 498 (A) – murder and domestic violence against married woman – for February 15.
