MANGALURU: Two autorickshaw drivers were killed in two separate accidents that took place near Netravati Bridge in Ullal and on Mani-Puttur Road on Saturday.
Chamraj, 44, a resident of Pajeer, was killed after a recklessly driven car hit his vehicle from behind at Netravati Bridge around 8am.
According to South traffic police, Chamraj was returning to Asaigoli after dropping a passenger in Mangaluru. A speeding hatchback car first hit a goods vehicle and then rammed into the autorickshaw. The autorickshaw driver was thrown out of his vehicle and was run over by the car. The car driver was heading to a college near Talapady.
Police said that there has been a rise in the number of accidents on this stretch. Sanu Abraham, 21, a hotel management student, died at a private hospital after his bike was hit by another scooter on Wednesday. Meanwhile, CCTV cameras installed on the bridge by Mangaluru Urban Development Authority are not yet functional.
In another incident, an autorickshaw driver was killed on the spot after his vehicle toppled and fell on him near Kodaje on Mani-Puttur Road. According to police, the incident took place at 9am, when Hameed, 35, of Kodaje and his family were travelling towards Peraje. Near Kodaje, the speeding vehicle suddenly moved to the right and toppled before hitting an SUV. The autorickshaw fell on Hameed, who had by then fallen on the road. His wife sustained minor injuries. Police said that a technical glitch may have led to the accident.
