MANGALURU: Palakkad division of Southern Railway commissioned the doubling of 1.93-km stretch of the Mangaluru junction-Jokatte section as part of Mangaluru Junction- Panambur doubling project on March 3. The division also took up the yard remodelling and provision of interlocking at Mangaluru junction railway station on the infrastructure front, noted Pratap Singh Shami, divisional railway manager, Palakkad division on Saturday.
Conveying Independence day message of general manager, Southern Railway at the 74th Independence Day celebration at divisional railway headquarters at Palakkad, he said business development units were set up at headquarters and all six divisions of Southern Railway. This helped the zonal railway to tap new streams of goods traffic and resulted in movement of edible oil from Panambur to Lucknow, cotton seeds from Salem to Bathinda/Hissar.
Southern Railway operated Shramik trains from May 1 to July 10 in coordination with the state government and carried 7,22,404 guest workers from Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka as well as from the Union territory of Puducherry to various other states. For the movement of essential commodities like groceries, medicine, and so on, Southern Railway handled 912 parcel express trains, out of which 564 were operated exclusively by the zone.
During this lockdown, as per Railway Board guidelines, Southern Railway also modified 572 coaches as Covid isolation coaches with necessary facilities for handling asymptomatic and mild symptomatic patients. Southern Railway had converted the maximum number of coaches into isolation wards among all other zones in Indian Railways. Out of 969 SR employees infected by coronavirus, 606 have recovered and 343 are under treatment, he said.
A V Ramana, chairman, New Mangalore Port Trust in his ID message said instructions at the port level have already been given through various board resolutions to encourage NSIC and MSME and ‘Make in India’ products. Even the contracts like dredging and tug hire will be only limited to India. These are being done as a part of Atma Nirbhar Bharat call given by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he said at a celebration that only 50 people attended.
In Konkan Railway
Sanjay Gupta, chairman and managing director, Konkan Railway Corporation Ltd in the ID celebration held at Konkan Rail Vihar, Nerul, Navi Mumbai said during the pandemic, KRCL operated 94 Shramik Specials including from Udupi to various places. KRCL also set up Covid quarantine centres at Chiplun, Ratnagiri, Madgaon, Verna, Karwar and Udupi railway stations, Gupta said, highlighting the role played by the corporation in combatting the pandemic.
On projects of national importance that KRCL is handling, he said work of Udhampur-Srinagar -Baramulla rail link project is in progress and moving at a fast pace. Work of Raxaul-Kathmandu rail line survey has been awarded to KRCL. The DEMU train for the Nepal project is already ready. Electrification on Konkan Railway is in fast progress. Commissioner for Railway safety approved the electrification of 108 km from Bijoor to Thokur, he said.
