MANGALURU: In swift action, four police teams with 40 personnel arrested four labourers late Tuesday evening on charges of sexually assaulting and murdering an eight-year-old girl at a tile factory in Mangaluru Rural police station limits on Sunday.
Three of the accused — Jayban aka Jay Singh, 21; Mukesh Singh, 20; from Madhya Pradesh; and Manish Tirki, 33, from Jharkhand — worked in the same factory, and Muneem Singh, 20, from MP, worked as a labourer in Puttur. Police chief N Shashi Kumar said on Wednesday that the girl’s parents, from Jharkhand, also worked at the factory as labourers for the past two years.
Police said the girl was last seen playing with her three siblings near a water tank inside the factory premises around1pm on Sunday. Investigations said Jayban allegedly whisked the girl away into a room covering her mouth to muffle her cries. Three of the accused allegedly took turns to sexually assault the girl.
Girl throttled and dumped in drain; neighbour finds her dead
When the girl started bleeding excessively and screaming in pain, the accused feared the incident would come to light. Jayban allegedly throttled her. He and Muneem dumped the survivor into a two-foot-deep drain leaving her for dead.
Vishwanath, a neighbour and former labourer, saw the girl in the drain around 6pm, but she was dead by then. After their search for the girl ended in tragedy, her parents filed a complaint with the jurisdictional police.
Preliminary findings of the postmortem conducted at the Government Wenlock Hospital confirmed throttling, injuries in the mouth, a history of anal sexual abuse and excessive bleeding during vaginal intercourse, according to the police commissioner.
The police commissioner said they formed four teams with nearly 40 personnel, including two DCPs and four ACPs, to crack the case. The teams combed through hours of CCTV footage, call data records and statements of more than 20 people, mainly staff and labourers of the tile factory.
Based on technical and circumstantial evidence, including the statement of a child, police arrested the four accused – two from Mangaluru and two from Puttur – late Tuesday evening. Soon after the incident, the labourers were taken to Samudaya Bhavan for interrogation. The accused were produced before a court in Mangaluru on Wednesday.
Police said Manish Tirki joined the tile factory 11 months ago, and Jayban and Mukesh Singh came in three months ago. Muneem, from Puttur, had come to meet the three accused a day before the incident. Sources in the factory said sperate accommodations had been provided for bachelors and labourers with family.
Jayban and Manish often shared a room and investigations said they had lured the girl with chocolate or money and sexually assaulted her in the past too. According to police, the accused reportedly chose that area as it was not covered by CCTV and vigil is usually lax on Sundays with thin labour movement inside the factory premises. After the assault, Muneem and Mukesh decided to go to Puttur, and the other two stayed back at the factory and even offered assistance in looking for the girl.
The police commissioner handed over a cash reward of Rs 25,000 to ACP (south sub-division) Ranjith Kumar Bhandaru for solving the case and arresting the accused.
