Mangaluru: Congress protests standing in solidarity with farmers | Mangaluru News – Times of India

MANGALURU: Standing in solidarity with the agitating farmers, members and functionaries of the Mangaluru South Constituency committee of the Congress on Monday gathered near the mini Vidhana Soudha in the coastal city to protest the farm laws passed by both the state and central governments.
Leaders of the Dakshina Kannada District Congress committee have decided to hold demonstrations against the farm laws in all the assembly constituencies of the district. In Mangaluru, former MLA JR Lobo and former MLC Ivan D’Souza led the protest in Mangaluru city.
Launching an attack against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, D’Souza said, “PM Modi is working only for the welfare of four capitalists of India. The Centre is not concerned about the problems faced by the people of the country. The central government is least concerned about the welfare of the farmers and their struggle to secure a fair price for crops. The existence of the Agriculture Produce Market committees (APMCs) ensures that the farmers get the minimum support price for their produce. But the government has destroyed this mechanism for the benefit of capitalists and industrialists.”
Lobo charged the BJP of adopting an apathetic attitude towards the farmers who had been protesting for more than two months. “The pro-farmer policies of the erstwhile Congress governments have been done away with. Many farmers have passed away during this long protest. But the Modi-led government has not taken a decision that is founded on humanitarian concerns. They rode to power by promising benefits to farmers but are ignoring their concerns now. This government has no moral right to stay in power,” Lobo said.
