Love wins: Karnataka man marries paraplegic sweetheart | Bengaluru News – Times of India

CHIKKAMAGALURU: Wedding vows include standing by each other in sickness and health, and for Manu and Swapna of Chikkamagaluru, their marriage was a fulfilment of that solemn promise. Two years after his sweetheart from school became a wheelchairbound paraplegic in a fall, Manu convinced her and her family that he would not only love her till the very end, but also take care of her.
Manu and Swapna, 21, fell in love when she was studying in Class 10 six years ago. Manu, who dropped out after II PU, began working in a hardware shop while Swapna went on to do II PU. She was also learning computers and it was at class that an accident changed her life. “Two years ago, I fell to the ground and the impact made me lose control over my legs within weeks. Despite treatment, doctors failed to revive mobility. I began to worry that Manu would not love me for long. But he convinced my family to marry me,” said Swapna, radiant in a purple sari at the wedding.

There was the issue of caste as well, though both families are from the same village, Bhaktharahalli, on the outskirts of Malnad town. Soon after the accident, Manu pitched in to take care of Swapna, eventually quitting his job too. The duo went to several hospitals and consulted doctors but she did not regain any control over her legs. Swapna’s parents are dailywagers and the strain of the condition and treatment was beginning to tell.
“When our efforts to get her back on her feet failed, I decided to take care of her permanently,” said Manu. “I told her I would marry her so that I can be with her. I spoke to my parents and hers. What happened to her is unfortunate, but my love for her is true and I will take care of her all my life.”
Once the parents approved, the couple married in Bhaktharahalli in the presence of his family and friends. “They love each other deeply and take care of each other. It is his love that has made him dedicate his life for her,” said Nivesh, Manu’s friend.
