Karnataka: Udupi police crackdown on faulty silencers, destroy them publicly | Mysuru News – Times of India

MANIPAL: In a major crackdown on vehicles operating with modified silencers, Udupi district police on Wednesday destroyed 51 silencers by crushing them under a bulldozer.
This step followed a spate of complaints that the district police top brass received from residents of this educational hub about youths disturbing the peace and tranquillity of the neighbourhood with the silencers that breached the noise limit prescribed for this equipment.
Superintendent of police N Vishnuvardhan told reporters at Manipal police station that he was flooded with complaints of youths going around in their vehicles with modified silencers. This problem was acute especially during the weekends, SP said adding staff from the police station carried out a special drive to identify such vehicles that were causing sound pollution and took steps to publicly destroy them to send a clear message to the violators.
This action has also been taken during the ongoing National Road Safety Month that is being observed from January 18 to February 17, the SP said. The maximum sound permissible as per the Motor Vehicle (MV) Act ranges from 80-91dB with the prescribed level being the least at 80dB for two-wheeler motorcycle and 91 dB for passenger, commercial vehicles with gross vehicle weight above 12000kgs, SP explained.
Noting that most of these silencers are being locally modified, SP said the police has decided to go after those doing in such illegal act that is punishable under section 52 and 190(2) of the MV Act with a fine ranging from Rs 500 to Rs 2000, by getting the Udupi CMC to cancel their trade license. Police from January 1 to 31 have booked 51 cases including 50 against motorcyclists and collected Rs 25,500 in the form of fine from them.
The district police will extend this drive to the rest of the district by seizing and destroying faulty silencers, SP said.
