Karnataka: Transgender’s life story to be university textbook | Hubballi News – Times of India

HUBBALLI: In a big boost to Kannada queer literature, Gulbarga University Kalaburagi is set to make transgender activist Manjamma Jogati’s autobiography a textbook for undergraduate students from the next academic year.
Naduve Suliva Hennu captures the life and times of Jogati, who is the first transgender chief of Karnataka Janapada Academy and winner of Padma Shri award.
‘Honour for transgender of the Jogati heritage’
The book narrated by Arun Joladkudligi was released in January 2020. University vicechancellor Dayanand Agsar told TOI that the decision of the undergraduate board of studies is “a good move”. Once the academic council gives the green signal, it will be part of the syllabus from 2021-22, he added.
‘Naduve Suliva Hennu’ is the second autobiography of Jogati. The first autobiography, penned by Sobati Chandru of Karnataka Folklore University, had been made into a textbook by Karnataka State Akkamahadevi Women’s University from 2019 to 2021. Jogati called the university decision “a great honour for a transgender of the Jogati heritage who has just passed Class 10. In school, I had read about Gandhi, Ambedkar and Kittur Chennamma, among others, decades after their death. In this case, students will read my story when I am still active.”
Edited version

Prof HT Pote, who heads the varsity’s board of studies, said the textbook is for fourth-semester students of BSc course. As part of interdisciplinary approach to education, degree students are encouraged to pick one subject outside of their core area to study, and the varsity zeroed in on the autobiography. It will help them understand the third gender with better perspective, he added.
The university has asked the publisher to prune the book from 248 pages to 100 pages. M Rajeshwari of Pallava Prakashana, which published the book, said they were editing the book to the varsity’s requirement.
