BENGALURU: Telangana has administered the first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine to 9.5 lakh people per million of its eligible population, the highest among 15 big states in the country, while Karnataka stands fifth on this parameter, having partially vaccinated 8.7 lakh per million.
However, in terms of fully vaccinated individuals, Karnataka stands second having administered both doses of the vaccine to 4.3 lakh per million eligible population, according to data for top 15 big states released by the government of India as at 8.30am on Thursday.

Gujarat (nearly 5 lakh) leads the country in the fully vaccinated count per million eligible population while Kerala lags Karnataka by only a couple of thousands. On the partially vaccinated (only first dose) front too, Gujarat (9.3 lakh per million), Madhya Pradesh (8.9 lakh) and Kerala (slightly over 8.7 lakh) fare better than Karnataka.
Dr Arundhathi Chandrashekar, mission director, National Health Mission, Karnataka said Team Karnataka with active participation from political leaders, officials, staff of various government departments, healthcare workers, NGOs, the private sector and citizens at large, put in extensive efforts to ensure widespread vaccination coverage.
“The last mile was always going to be a challenge,” Dr Arundhathi said. “We need to identify those unvaccinated and due for a second dose. We need to motivate and mobilise them to take the shot.”
The state health and family welfare department is now planning door-to-door visits with electoral rolls as a reference to identify those who are yet to take the shot as well as those eligible for the second dose.
