karnataka: Lockdown effect: Crimes against women dip by 8% in Karnataka | Bengaluru News – Times of India
The latest crime data released by National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) shows nationally, crime against women fell to around 3.7 lakh cases last year compared to more than 4 lakh cases in 2019. Similarly, cases in Karnataka stood at 12,680 in 2020 compared to 13,828 in the year before that.
Majority of crimes against women under IPC were registered under ‘cruelty by husband or his relatives’ (30.0%) followed by ‘assault on women with intent to outrage her modesty’ (23.0%), ‘kidnapping and abduction of women’ (16.8%) and ‘rape’ (7.5%).
Data shows that as many as 226 women were victims of rape and murder across India. Uttar Pradesh (UP) topped the table with 31 cases and was followed by Madhya Pradesh (27 cases), Assam (26), Maharashtra (20), Odisha (18) and Karnataka (seven).
Similarly, 7,045 women victims died in dowry harassment-related cases — 2,302 in UP alone — with Bihar (1,047 cases), Madhya Pradesh (627), Rajasthan (480) and Karnataka (178) among the top states.
As many as 104 women were kidnapped and murdered with UP again registering the most cases (58), followed by Bihar and Jharkhand (11 each). Karnataka recorded zero cases of kidnap and murder of women.
“The country remained under complete lockdown from March 25 to May 31, 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, during which time movement in public space was very limited. Cases registered under crimes against women, children and senior citizens, theft, burglary, robbery and dacoity have therefore declined across the country,” the NCRB report reads. In line with this, major IPC crimes like kidnap for ransom, robbery, house break thefts and cheating fell in Karnataka but murder and attempt to murder cases went up.
A total of 1,420 people in Karnataka were murdered in 2020 compared to 1,392 in the previous year. Attempt to murder cases increased to 3,498 from 3,148.
The state reported 2,122 kidnappings, including 48 for ransom, in 2020 compared to 2,894 cases in 2019, including 52 done for ransom. There was no real change in rape numbers: 2020 saw 507 compared to 508 in the previous year.
Cases of robbery dipped from 1,865 in 2019 to 1,383 in 2020, while house break thefts reduced from 5,157 to 4,191. And, cheating cases dipped from 5,495 to 4,043.
