Karnataka govt has to decide on restarting midday meals by April 8: HC – Times of India

BENGALURU: The high court on Tuesday said the government has to decide to reintroduce midday meals from April 15, as long as classes 6-10 students are going to school.

The decision has to be conveyed to the court on or before April 8, a division bench headed by Justice BV Nagarathna said in response to a PIL seeking reintroduction of midday meals in schools and Anganwadi centres.

Earlier, in its status report, the government said it will continue providing food security allowance to students in the form of foodgrains, keeping in view the second wave of the pandemic. It said cooking and serving meals on school premises would lead to more Covid-19 infections.

As for providing meals at Anganwadi centres, the government said a decision will be taken as per the advice of the health and family welfare department’s technical advisory committee.

After perusing the status report, the bench said prima facie food security allowance cannot be continued with since schools are open. “The state has formulated a midday meal scheme. Therefore, it is necessary that students attending classes 6 to 10 are provided meals,” the bench said.
