MANGALURU: Dakshina Kannada on Saturday reported five cases of Omicron variant of Covid-19.
Cases of the Omicron variant of the virus were reported from the samples collected from two clusters in the district on December 10. While one of the clusters with 16 cases of Covid-19 was reported at a Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV) in the district, another was a cluster with 19 cases of SARS-CoV-2 found in a private nursing college in the outskirts of Mangaluru.
In fact, 16 cases of Covid-19 were reported at the JNV in the last week of November. Meanwhile, another cluster with 19 cases was found on December 9. Reports of the genome sequencing for the samples from two clusters sent on December 10 tested positive for Omicron on Saturday, the DC said.
“Today we received the reports of four positive cases of Omicron variant from the JNV and one from the private nursing college. Health officials have visited the educational institutions on Saturday and found all students healthy and all are negative for Covid-19 now. As per initial contact tracing, the health department did not find history of traveling abroad in any one of the cases,” the DC said.
Dr Ashok H, district nodal officer for Covid-19, said that the samples from both the clusters were sent for genomic sequencing based on the directions of the state government. “None of the students were symptomatic and they are healthy. They have no travel history to any foreign countries or the neighbouring state of Kerala. Neither their parents have visited Kerala nor foreign countries.
In fact, health minister Dr K Sudhakar had tweeted declaring the detection of five Omicron variant of the virus from students of Dakshina Kannada. The minister also had mentioned in his tweet that a traveller from UK also was tested positive for Omicron, but the DC confirmed that the traveller from UK is not from Dakshina Kannada.
