Karnataka: Belagavi woman offers mangalsutra for 500 traffic fine; video goes viral | Hubballi News – Times of India

BELAGAVI: Traffic cops near the city bus stand were taken by surprise when a woman offered her mangalsutra to pay the fine for helmetless riding. The woman and her husband were on their way back home after shopping and told the cops they had run out of money when the argument spun out of control.
The incident, which occurred earlier this week, came to light as a video of their interaction went viral. Bharati Vibhooti, 30, and her husband, who run a hotel in Hullolihatti village of Hukkeri, had gone to the city on their motorbike on Sunday to buy a cot. The couple spent Rs 1,700 on the cot and ate breakfast for the remaining Rs 100 they had. On their way back, they were stopped by traffic cops near the bus stand.
Vibhooti told TOI that police sought Rs 500 fine for riding without a helmet. “I told the cops that we had spent the last Rs 100 we had on breakfast, but they insisted we pay,” she said. The argument went on for nearly two hours, and people began to gather, she said. In a fit of rage, Vibhooti said, she removed her mangalsutra and handed it over to a traffic policeman and asked him to sell it to collect the fine. Senior police officers who were passing by intervened and let the couple go.
