Karnataka: Assistant professor held for sexually harassing agriculture student | Bengaluru News – Times of India

Noor Nawaz AS, an assistant professor at College of Agriculture, Hanumanamatti, Haveri district, affiliated to University of Agriculture Sciences, Dharwad, has been arrested for allegedly sexually harassing a student and threatening her.
The incident came to light after Nawaz’s wife attacked the woman. A case was registered at Ranebennur rural station on March 17. As per the complainant, a 24-year-old Bengaluru-based woman, she joined BSc agriculture in the college in 2018. Nawaz, 41, assistant professor in department of microbiology, allegedly demanded sexual favours from her. He raped her in his chamber in 2019, she alleged.
Nawaz allegedly forced the survivor to live with him in his rented house during the lockdown and raped her repeatedly. His wife, a teacher, was stranded in Shivamogga duing the lockdown.
Meanwhile, he also threatened the woman with dire consequences if she told anyone about the abuse. “He told me he would fail me in his subject and even kill me if I did not comply,” the survivor told police in her complaint. “On March 12, the accused’s wife and two other people attacked me,” she alleged.
Police booked the accused under several sections. “He admitted he had sex with the student. We need to interrogate him further and are collecting evidence. We have informed the varsity about the incident,” said Ranebennur DySP TV Suresh. He added that they will summon Nawaz’s wife.
UAS-D VC Prof MB Chetti clarified they received information about the case from dean Prof R Basavarajappa. “The university will initiate action against Nawaz. If he is detained for over 24 hours he will be suspended as per KCSR rules,” he said.
