Karnataka: ‘Army man’ makes false marriage promises to 3, dupes 6 of lakhs | Bengaluru News – Times of India

BENGALURU: A 26-year-old man, who pretended to be a military officer and allegedly cheated three women after promising to marry them, has been arrested. The man also defrauded at least six others of lakhs of rupees after promising to get them cars and motorbikes, among other things, for a low price from a military canteen.
Anjanesh Subhash Matapati, a resident of Rammohanpur in Subramanyanagar and from Athani in Belagavi, took Rs 3 lakh from the three women after promising to marry them, police said. Cops also recovered a fake ID card used by Anjanesh to pose as a military officer.
Bengaluru police registered their first FIR against Anjanesh on Thursday evening. “Medical shop owner M Eshwar from Subramanyanagar approached us saying Anjanesh cheated him of Rs 21 lakh. We registered an FIR and arrested the accused immediately. During investigation, we discovered Anjanesh has duped others as well. As far as we know, this is the first FIR against him. We will verify if there are other victims,” DCP (north) Dharmender Kumar Meena told TOI.
Anjanesh promised to get the medical shop owner a car and also supply him surgical gloves. Meanwhile, two private company employees paid around Rs 3 lakh after Anjanesh promised to get them brand-new Bullet motorbikes.
Anjanesh, a bachelor, told cops he served as a sepoy in Madras Engineer Group (MEG) in Bengaluru. “He claims to have been in MEG between 2014 and 2018. We have approached MEG officials, seeking clarification,” an investigating officer said.
Anjanesh’s father Subhash Matapati too had served in the army as a sepoy, said police. Initial investigation revealed Anjanesh’s fascination for a lavish lifestyle could have pushed him into duping people. “Last year, he supplied a few boxes of surgical gloves, purchased from a military canteen, to a medical shop owner in the city and earned good commission on it. Assuming it to be an easy way to get money, he approached other victims and convinced them he could get things from the military canteen,” a police officer said.
