BENGALURU: The Karnataka transport department has received nearly 1.3 lakh online applications since Thursday from cab and autorickshaw drivers seeking Covid-19 relief aid.
Sources said that close to 1.1 lakh applications have been approved and 4,629 papers have been processed for payment.
The department on Thursday allowed autorickshaw, taxi and maxi-cab drivers to apply through the Seva Sindhu portal to get the state government’s one-time Covid-19 financial assistance of Rs 3,000.
Till Saturday, the department received 1.3 lakh online applications across the state – 72,256 of them came from autorickshaw drivers, 48,196 motor cabs and 7,361 from maxi-cab drivers.
Records show that the maximum applications are from Bengaluru Urban (56,701), followed by Mysuru (8,404) and Dakshina Kannada district (6,848), Tumakuru (6,819), Mandya (4,740) and Udupi (3,014).

Many unions of auto and taxi drivers, who are facing a huge dip in earnings due to the ongoing lockdown, said the government aid of Rs 3,000 each is not enough. In May 2020, the government had announced relief of Rs 5,000 each for 7.5 lakh auto and taxi drivers.
However, money was disbursed among only 2.1 lakh beneficiaries who had registered with the government. Many drivers demanded a monthly aid of Rs 5,000 for three months or one-time payment of Rs 10,000 for all drivers across the state.
