Kalyan Karnataka demands stoppage for Statue of Unity Express | Hubballi News – Times of India

KALABURAGI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate a direct train between the Statue of Unity (Kevadiya) and Chennai on Sunday. Though this train will pass through Kalaburagi, a divisional headquarter of the state and considered the capital of Kalyan Karnataka (KK), there will be no stoppage here, much to the disappointment of those who wish to travel to Gujarat.
There is a strong connection between KK region and India’s first deputy Prime Minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel as he had led the annexation of the then Hyderabad-Karnataka region from the Nizams. Though this train will stop at Wadi, a junction station, it’s just a technical stoppage. Kevadiya is the place where the world’s largest statue of Sardar Patel is built. This new weekly train is being introduced to attract more tourists to Sardar Patel’s statue.
Sunil Kulkarni, president, KK Grahakara Vedike, told TOI: “Kalaburagi was proposed for a railway division during Mallikarjun Kharge’s tenure as railway minister but such a station is being neglected by the railways to provide a stoppage for the train. Only technical halt is provided for Wadi. It’s matter of shame that people of the region are deprived of this train.”
Amarnath Patil, president, Hyderabad Karnataka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (HKCCI), rued that step-motherly treatment is meted out to Kalaburagi by the Central Railway (CR) since years. “CR’s Solapur divisional officials always try to grab facilities like WiFi and others sanctioned to Kalaburagi. For instance, construction of a flyover on Afzalpur Road in Kalaburagi is going on since seven years. A second pit line at Sultanpur, for which tender was floated during Kharge’s tenure, was cancelled later. Only Rs one lakh was sanctioned to set up divisional headquarter in Kalaburagi two years ago. The train which was sanctioned to run between Kalaburagi-Hassan was forced to run from Solapur. Though it gets full in Kalaburagi, only 14 seats are reserved for this historical city. We are buying online tickets from Solapur with the boarding option of Kalaburagi,” he said, adding that HKCCI has written to the railway ministry demanding a stoppage for the new train.
Patil HS, president, Hyderabad-Karnataka Horata Samiti, Koppal district, demanded the railways provide stoppage to the train at Kalaburagi.
Shivaji Sutar, CPRO, CR, Mumbai, asserted that the train is being operated by the Western Railway. “As far as the halts are concerned, we will examine the proposal” he added.
