Inter-faith students on bike assaulted in Mangaluru | Mangaluru News – Times of India

MANGALURU: In yet another case of moral policing, two students belonging to different communities were allegedly assaulted and harassed for travelling together on a twowheeler in Idya village near Surathkal here on Monday night. Police arrested six people from the spot and have registered a case.
“The accused said they belong to pro-Hindu organisations,” Mangaluru police commissioner N Shashi Kumar said.
The complainant, a BSc student from a college in Mukka, said he was dropping his friend to her apartment complex in Idya at 10pm when the accused waylaid them and started abusing them. “The accused followed the students on their bikes. They intercepted them near the girl’s apartment complex and asked their names. After the students revealed their names, the group abused them. They reprimanded the girl for travelling with a boy from another community. The men then assaulted the students and even outraged the girl’s modesty by touching and pushing her,” sources said.
Police named the arrested as Prahalad, Prashanth, Guru Prasad, Prateesh, Bharath and Sukesh. “The accused indulged in criminal activities that could result in breach of communal harmony. They also threatened the complainant with dire consequences for moving around with a girl from another community,” police said.
According to sources, a case has been registered under various IPC sections at Surathkal police station and the accused were produced before a court.
