HUBBALLI: Amid the pandemic, as the restaurants and eateries across the city are limping back to life, a few are keeping spirits alive with creative names, besides an array of innovative food and drinks.
Several popular biryani restaurants and fast-food joints in Hubballi are using puns in their names as well the menu to attract customers.
The desire to grab customers, the urge to stand out from the competition and create an immediate brand recall in the competitive food business has led to many youngsters experimenting with unusual and rather odd names.
Shah Bazaar is a hub of such joints and their names include Tagad Biryani (metal), Steel Biryani, Magnet Biryani, Shed Biryani — a dudden shift from the regular names such as Madina, Taj, Al-Madeena, Zam Zam among others.
Speaking to TOI, Imran Nalaband who owns a biryani joint said,“ We started the eatery in a shed covered with asbestos sheets 18 years ago. Because of the metal sheets, people started calling it Tagad Biryani Hotel. We retained the name as people recognise us by it.”
“It is rather funny. We wanted to combine food with fun, and it worked too,” he added. Manager of Magnet Hotel said the owner of the hotel was a cook in the Steel Hotel.
“ When he came out and launched a hotel of his own, he named it Magnet,” he added. “The names of the hotels sound funny and interesting. These names will surely help to remember them each time visit the city,” said Francis, a businessman from Goa.
There are more than 15 to 20 hotels along with eateries on push cart in Shah Bazar. During festivals, the market witnesses huge crowds not only from Hubballi-Dharwad, but also from neighbouring Gadag, Haveri, and other districts. Chicken and mutton biryani, several types of Kabab, fish and tandoori, Chinese items, Hyderabadi dum tea among others are available here.
