haveri: Karnataka: 13-year-old rape survivor gives birth in Haveri | Hubballi News – Times of India

A 13-year-old nomadic girl, sexually assaulted by a cousin who said he would marry her only to backtrack later, delivered a premature baby girl at Haveri District Hospital on Wednesday.
Sources said the accused has been identified as Prakash Dombar, 25. The assault took place at his house in Shivamogga district. The girl continued to stay with the boy’s family even after the assault and returned to her home in Haveri district a couple of months ago.
When the survivor’s father refused to lodge a sexual assault complaint against Prakash, anganwadi and health workers informed Sakhi One Stop Centre, a government agency that admitted the girl to the district hospital on Tuesday. She delivered the baby the next day.
Following a complaint by Sharavva Gudageri, a member of Sakhi, Hanagal police registered a case under the Pocso Act against Prakash and his mother Ratnamma Dombar.
Sharavva said the plight of the teen mother was moving. “Given her age, she doesn’t know how to feed her child. We will shift her to Mahila Santvana Kendra once the deputy director of the women and child welfare department gives the nod,” she added. With her mother dead, the girl is being looked after by her maternal grandmother. Her elder sister is married and younger sister is eight years old.
Hanagal police station subinspector Srishail Pattanashetty said the women and child welfare department brought the case to their notice. “We will initiate action against the accused soon,” he added.
