dubai: Omicron effect: Dubai-Mangaluru airfare down 50% | Mangaluru News – Times of India

MANGALURU: Airfares are returning to pre-Covid levels as airlines are witnessing cancellations and less bookings due to Omicron scare.
Prices of return air tickets from Dubai to Mangaluru have dropped by nearly 50% in December compared to October fares. For instance, an air ticket to the coastal city from Dubai and the return journey that cost Rs 1 lakh in October is now priced at Rs 50,000 or less.
Airlines flying to the Middle East see rush of passengers during annual school vacation, Eid and Christmas holidays. During these periods — from June-end to December — airfares double. With fares dropping this month, Indians working abroad see a window to return home for holidays.
In October, ticket prices were 150% more for a layover flight and 200% higher for a direct flight from all airports in India to Dubai and Sharjah.
The pandemic and bubble travel arrangements have restricted the number of flights. The initial seat-capping rules also resulted in prices going up from Rs 9,000-Rs 12,000 to Rs 16,000-Rs 25,000.
Cancellations & rebookings
“The fares went up in October ahead of the holiday season in December. But there were not many bookings and many airlines were forced to reduce ticket prices. Even those who had booked their air tickets earlier are now cancelling and rebooking at cheaper rates,” an airline offical told TOI.
Now, Mangaluru-Dubai one-way fare till mid-January is in the range of Rs 21,000 to Rs 25,000 and around Rs 30,000 on weekends. In October, the same tickets were priced around Rs 50,000. With bookings slowly picking up in the past three days, the official said that Dubai-Mangaluru return fare has gone up by Rs 6,000 from Rs 45,000 to Rs 51,000.
