Day one: Only 23% of frontline staff jabbed in Karnataka | Bengaluru News – Times of India

BENGALURU: On the first day of Covid vaccination drive for frontline workers, Karnataka saw 20,017 (nearly 23%) of the targeted 87,098 taking the jab on Monday.
The state aims to vaccinate 3 lakh such workers from revenue, home, rural development and panchayat raj and urban development departments in the 3-day drive. The highest turnout was seen in Uttara Kannada and Vijayapura districts with 45% coverage by 6.30pm.
Under 10% coverage in 6 districts
In Bengaluru Urban district, of the 13,311 frontline workers registered, only 2,523 (or 19%) turned up. However, Bengaluru had the highest number of frontline workers getting vaccinated in the state. The least was in Haveri, where 12 of 200 registered workers came forward to get vaccinated. Six districts reported less than 10% coverage.
The low turnout was attributed to several hiccups on the first day. Many frontline workers who received messages through Co-WIN portal did not turn up at designated vaccination session sites. Dr MK Sudarshan, chairperson, Covid-19 Technical Advisory Committee, said incidence of Covid-19 is low and the perception of threat is low. “The fast-tracked vaccines are viewed with suspicion for safety and efficacy. It is important that people’s doubts are addressed, particularly those in lower rungs of the organisation. The heads of department and sections should be the first to get vaccinated and inform others to make the drive successful,” he added.

Ramesh, 34, who is working as a pourakarmika for 17 years, said: “I worked throughout the lockdown period with the objective that the city should be kept clean during a health crisis. I underwent Covid tests six times and was negative. I am fine after vaccination and have not had any side-effects,” he said. In all, 26 frontline workers took the vaccine at the hospital and 21 of them were pourakarmikas.
