Dakshina Kannada: International surfing venue eroded | Mangaluru News – Times of India

MANGALURU: The surfing venue where star cricketer of South Africa Jonty Rhodes and Bollywood action superstar Suniel Shetty witnessed an international event has been completely engulfed by the Arabian sea in the sea erosion.
The beautiful Munda Beach expanse in Sasihitlu, about 25km from here, that attracted surfers from various countries has been destroyed due to sea erosion. Former sports minister K Abhayachandra Jain and Dakshina Kannada District Youth Congress former president Mithun Rai visited the beach on Tuesday and urged the government to immediately take necessary steps to preserve the surfing spot.
Jain said, “A plan was prepared to develop the beach into an international tourist attraction. A sea erosion prevention wall was constructed three yeas ago at a cost of Rs 50 lakh. There were plans to construct a bridge to connect Munda Beach with Chitrapura. However, all projects were stalled after the change in government in the state. More than two acres of the shore, where sea erosion wall is not constructed, has been eroded in the sea erosion. The district administration should release at least Rs 2 crore from its emergency fund to protect the beach.”
Jain said that surfing events were held thrice when he was the MLA. Security guards and lifeguards were appointed with the support of the local gram panchayat. Restaurants, shops and toilets were constructed for the convenience of tourists. However, all such infrastructure have been destroyed due to the sea erosion in the past three years.
Meanwhile, several lives were lost in the beach due to lack of lifeguards at present, he said adding that the tourism minister C P Yogeeshwara should consider developing the beach.
The beach was witness to the drowning of 10 tourists in the past two years due to lack of lifeguards. Four people drowned on the beach in the past two months, he said.
Mithun Rai said there is nearly 60 acres of government land on the shores of Sasihitlu. “The government should put honest efforts to develop the beach and protect the government land. We will commence a campaign to develop the beach,” he added.
