Covid vaccination: In special drive, Karnataka aims to jab 30 lakh today | Bengaluru News – Times of India

BENGALURU: The country crossed the milestone of administering one billion Covid-19 vaccine doses on Thursday and Karnataka played its part by dispensing over 1.5 lakh doses until 7pm. The state has administered a total of 6.2 crore doses since January 16, when the vaccine was rolled out. This includes 4.1 crore first doses and over two crore second doses.
To mark the country’s milestone of a billion jabs, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) conducted a special vaccination drive for students at Government Ramnarayan Chellaram College of Commerce and Management where 400 pupils were administered a shot. Most were second-dose recipients.
“The college reopened after Dasara holidays and we vaccinated 400 students from the degree section,” said Dr Syed Ismail Perwez, medical officer, Vasanth Nagar, BBMP, who spearheaded the drive. “Most of them had already taken their first dose and were waiting for the 84-day interval to be completed to take the second dose.”
Many government-run vaccination centres put up selfie stands for people to click pictures on “landmark” Thursday.
Meanwhile, Karnataka has planned a mega drive on Friday and officials have set a target of administering 30 lakh doses. “Currently, the state has covered 84% of the eligible population with the first dose and 42% with the second dose. On Friday, we plan to administer 30 lakh doses during the special drive,” said Arundhathi Chandrashekar, mission director, National Urban Health Mission. She said there is no shortage of vaccine doses since the state had a stock of 50 lakh doses as on Thursday.
The focus of the vaccination drive has now shifted to covering eligible second-dose beneficiaries (those who have completed the 84-day interval). It may be recalled that on September 17, during the Lasika drive, the state topped the country with a record 31.7 lakh doses administered in a single day.
