Covid patient dies after family shifts him thrice
Trust your doctors is the advice we’ve been hearing time and again, but very few actually pay heed to it. A patient suffering from covid pneumonia died after his family shifted him thrice against the doctors’ advice as they were not happy with the treatment he was receiving. After landing at the third hospital, the patient was declared dead.
He said, “The family was very picky about the hospital and since it was a private bed, they visited two to three other hospitals before admitting the patient to the second hospital. He was in a critical condition when he was admitted to the hospital and was in an ICU ventilator for two days. The family was again not satisfied. On Wednesday, they decided to shift the patient a third time to another hospital in Vishweshwarapura against the hospital’s wishes. The patient ultimately died after reaching the hospital. Now, the family regrets not listening to the doctors.”

Dr Suri Raju V, Medical Director, Regal Multi-Speciality Hospital, said that shifting patients who are in a critical condition is a very risky endeavour. “There are cases of DAMA (Discharge against Medical Advice) where the family members of the patients want the patient to be moved to a different hospital. But they do not understand that covid treatment protocol is standardised across the city and in all hospitals. “If the patient has every medical need being met and there is a ventilator ICU available, moving patients on ventilator might deteriorate the health of the patient and it has also leads to mortality in certain cases. In case the family of the patient has concerns, they should speak with the hospital.”
