BENGALURU: A city court has sentenced a 28-year-old man to 20 years’ rigorous imprisonment for raping an eight-year-old in 2017.
The 54th additional civil and sessions court also fined M. Kiran Kumar, a resident of Benson Town in JC Nagar, Rs 10,000. Judge A.G. Gangadhara held that any failure to pay the fine will entail another six months’ imprisonment
Kiran was an unemployed 24-year-old when JC Nagar police arrested him under sections of the Pocso Act and IPC Section 376 for rape in March 2017.
Kiran lived with his grandparents as his parents worked in London, sources said. The girl, a relative of the convict, had come to his house with her elder brother in the first week of March 2017.
“One day, the elder brother of the girl saw Kiran Kumar committing the offence. Kiran Kumar threatened the girl and her brother not to reveal the matter. However, the girl’s mother discovered the offence and subjected her daughter to medical tests. The doctors confirmed that the minor had been raped,” public prosecutor K.V. Ashwathnarayan told TOI. On March 27, an FIR was registered against Kiran at JC Nagar police station. He was arrested the same day.
“Kiran raped the survivor continuously for over 10 days between March 10, 2017, and March 20, 2017,” Ashwathnarayan quoted from the chargesheet. The judgment was delivered on October 12.
