BENGALURU: The government’s decision to allow electric bike taxis in the city has not gone down well with many auto and taxi drivers.
A section of unions will stage a protest in front of the transport department office from 11am on Thursday.
“The Motor Vehicles Act does not have the provision for two-wheeler/ bike taxis but our government has given permission to bike taxis in favour of private companies. This will ruin the auto and taxi business as drivers are already facing a financial crunch due to the pandemic and reduced revenue,” said Tanveer Pasha, founder of an app-based taxi union.
“We will also submit a letter to the transport commissioner against this. If it is not withdrawn, we will go on an indefinite auto and taxi strike,” added Pasha. He said cab aggregators have been violating rules but no action has been taken against them despite several complaints.
Namma Chalakara Trade Union has started sending postcards to the chief minister, transport minister and others opposing ebike taxi services.
