Bengaluru riots: Accused dies in hospital

The 24-year-old died of ‘blunt injury’ say cops amid reports that he succumbed to bullet wounds

Four days after rioters clashed with the police in Bengaluru over a communal Facebook post by a Congress MLA’s nephew, an accused died in the hospital.

Sayyad Nadeem, a 24-year-old AC mechanic from Bengaluru’s KG Halli area, was arrested on August 12. After being produced before the Judicial Magistrate, he was remanded in judicial custody. He was admitted to Bowring Hospital after he complained of chest and stomach pain and breathlessness.

He was subsequently operated and was under medical observation. He died on Saturday. His Covid-19 test results came back positive, and he did not respond to post-operative treatment.

He died due to subsequent complications, said Additional CP Admin Hemanth Nimbalkar as he dismissed reports that Nadeem succumbed to a bullet injury.

Meanwhile, the Central Crime Branch (CCB) sleuths conducted a spot inspection of P Naveen’s house on Saturday and confiscated the mobile phone Naveen allegedly used to post the derogatory message.

“So far, 206 people have been arrested, but many others have been detained and their involvement is being probed using CCTV footage and videos that our men managed to record during the violence,” said a senior police officer.
