Bengaluru: Family friends who cheated constable of Rs 50 lakh nabbed | Bengaluru News – Times of India

BENGALURU: Kothanur police have arrested a couple on charges of cheating a police constable of Rs 50 lakh.
Shaji Damodaran, 42, and his wife Kanjana Bonmath, 40, residents of Horamavu, were arrested under IPC sections 406 (criminal breach of trust) and 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property), and were produced before a local court. The two have been remanded in police custody for 10 days. Police are looking for another accused identified as Alex from Kerala.
The complaint was filed by constable N Kemparaju, attached with Karnataka State Human Rights Commission, MS Building. Kemparaju told TOI that the couple befriended him when he was working at Hennur police station in early 2019. “Damodaran’s wife is a Thai national and they were facing document-related issues. I helped them in getting the issues solved, after which they became my close friends,” Kemparaju said. He said Damodaran claimed to be in the business of installing ACs in private and public sector buildings. Also, Damodaran said that he owns a property in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, valued at around Rs 3 core.
“One day, Damodaran showed me the documents of the same property, saying he had pledged them with a bank in Kerala for a loan. He also told me that he had won tenders for installing ACs at government buildings in Hyderabad, Goa and Delhi, for which he needed some urgent cash and asked me if I could help him,” Kemparaju said. Damodaran promised Kemparaju that he’d repay the loan soon.
“By then, we had become family friends. I couldn’t refuse and transferred Rs 30 lakh to the bank accounts of Damodaran and his wife in several instalments. Later, Damodaran demanded more money and I pledged my wife’s and other family members’ gold and arranged an additional Rs 20 lakh. The final payment was made in May this year. In August, Damodaran gave me a cheque for Rs 50 lakh, which bounced. Since then, the couple has remained incommunicado,” Kemparaju added.
Asked about the role of the Alex, Kemparaju said, “Alex was the person who assured me that Damodaran’s property in Kerala is worth around Rs 3 crore and said he stood guarantee for the loan money.”
