BENGALURU: Chief Justice Abhay Shreeniwas Oka on Friday said 40% of people who visit Cubbon Park in the morning don’t wear masks. He made this oral observation while hearing a PIL filed by Letzkit, a Bengalurubased organizati on, which is seeking strict enforcement of standard operating procedures (SOPs) in place for Covid-19.
“All that is needed is clarity that violation of SOP will attract penal provision and there should be an enforceable machinery to ensure that people adhere to norms, violators are penalised as per law, and facility to complain to authorities on violation of norms,” the petitioner said.

Meanwhile, the government informed the court that between March 23 and June 11, a total 1,20,327 lockdown / curfew violations were reported. It said 10,843 people were arrested, 1,05,158 vehicles seized, 4,947 FIRs registered and a fine of Rs 3.7 crore collected. In Bengaluru alone, BBMP collected Rs 29.8 lakh in fines in May.
Fifty nine people were booked for violating lockdown norms, including several people who followed when actor Chiranjeevi Sarja’s body was being taken for last rites. The actor died on June 7.
