BENGALURU: A man and his wife, both software professionals, working with a reputed firm in the city have been arrested for allegedly assaulting their 15-year-old domestic help.
Amith Singh Rathore and Sanju Singh living in Anugraha Icon apartment on Outer Ring Road in Mahadevapura allegedly thrashed the Class 6 student. Police said the girl lived with her parents in a temporary shed. When the pandemic broke out, her father lost his job. The girl began working as a live-in domestic help at Rathore’s house from October last year to support her family. The couple worked from home and hired the live-in maid to clean the house, wash clothes and vessels and cook for a monthly salary of Rs 8,000. The accused used to assault the girl, scratch her neck with nails, hit her with utensils and other things if she delayed her work, police said. The girl was confined to a room and the couple used to lock doors from outside whenever they went out.
On March 2, the girl managed to escape from the house and headed to her home but could not meet her parents. Rathore took the girl back to his house.
On March 5, the girl again escaped and met her mother. The mother noticed the bruises on the daughter’s body and took her to hospital.
She later filed a complaint, following which the couple was booked under various sections of IPC, Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act and Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act.
