Belagavi bypoll: Congress recommends Satish Jarkiholi’s name | Bengaluru News – Times of India

BENGALURU: Congress is expected to field KPCC working president Satish Jarkiholi as its candidate for Belagavi Lok Sabha seat, which will go to bypolls on April 17, while suspense over the ruling BJP’s nominee continues. Satish is the brother of BJP’s Ramesh Jarkiholi, who recently resigned as water resources minister following a sex CD scandal allegedly involving him.
KPCC president DK Shivakumar, opposition leader Siddaramaiah and other senior functionaries who met here on Saturday reportedly recommended Satish’s name to the high command for approval. Former MP Prakash Hukkeri and Congress MLA Lakshmi Hebbalkar’s brother Channaraj Hampiholi were also in the race, but the party preferred Satish considering the Jarkiholi family’s clout in Belagavi district. “We have sent only one name to the high command as far as Belagavi LS seat is concerned,” said Shivakumar.
BJP candidate undecided
The state BJP core committee also met on Saturday to shortlist names for bypolls. As expected, the party reportedly finalised names of Pratapgouda Patil for Maski and Mallikarjun Khuba for Basavakalyan assembly seats. But it left the decision to choose the Belagavi candidate to the party high command, in keeping with the latter’s reported inclination to field a fresh face. BJP’s national general secretary and Karnataka in-charge Arun Singh also participated in the meeting.
According to sources, four to five names, including Shradha Shettar, daughter of Suresh Angadi and daughter-in-law of industries minister Jagadish Shettar, Dr Girish Sonawalkar, Dr Ravi Patil and Mahantesh Kavatagimath, are in the reckoning.
The party might choose one of them or someone who is not in the list as it did in selection of candidates for Rajya Sabha elections,” said a BJP leader.
Since Belagavi is a bastion of BJP, the high command is said to be keen on taking the risk of fielding an ordinary party functionary like it did in the case of Tejasvi Surya, he said.
The state president will send names of probable candidates to the BJP’s central election committee, which will take a final call, said party national general secretary and state core committee member CT Ravi.
