BELAGAVI: A group of 20-25 men allegedly attacked a youth and a woman from different communities and robbed them of a cellphone and Rs 50,000 on the outskirts of Belagavi last week.
Police have arrested one person in the incident that took place on October 13. The victims who suffered minor injuries are recovering at their homes.
According to police, a 25-year-old man from Chinchalli village of Raibag taluk in the district arrived in Belagavi to write an exam. The 29-year-old woman, a homemaker and his acquaintance, was to collect Rs 50,000 from him. An FIR in the case said the victims met at the city’s central bus terminus and hired an autorickshaw to go to a park.

The driver observed that the duo’s attire indicated they were from different religions and took a detour to Aman Nagar where four persons boarded his autorickshaw.
The victims alleged that the four men asked the woman why was she traveling with a man from another faith and started hitting her. The driver allegedly drove his vehicle to a secluded area on the outskirts where 20-25 others had gathered.
They attacked the duo and took Rs 50,000, a cellphone, Aadhaar cards and other valuable documents from them. DCP (law and order) Vikram Amte said more details could not be shared as the case is under investigation.
