Sandalwood bids a teary farewell to veteran actor and friend of friends, Jayanthi

Veteran actor Jayanthi passed away on Monday morning at her home in Bengaluru. She was 76 and is survived by a son.

Born Kamala Kumari in Ballari on January 6, 1945, she made her debut in Sandalwood with Jenu Goodu in 1963. Drector of Jenu Goodu YR Swamy, gave her the name Jayanthi. Known by movie critics as Abhinaya Sharade, Jayanthi has acted in more than 500 movies in Kannada, Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam and Hindi.

Jayanthi has shared the screen with superstars of Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam film industries. She was the leading lady for Dr Rajkumar in Kannada, NT Rama Rao in Telugu, Gemini Ganesan in Tamil and acted in films directed by Puttanna Kanagal, K Balachander. She won Karnataka State best actress awards for her performance in movies such as Eda Kallu Guddada Mele, Manassinanthe Mangalya, Dharma Dari Thappithu, and Masanada Hoovu. She received best supporting actress award for Anand and Tuvvi Tuvvi. She also won Dr Rajkumar Lifetime Achievement Award.


People pay last respects to Jayanthi at Ravindra Kalakshetra

Jayanthi won a national award for her performance in the Kannada movie Chandavalliya Thota in which Dr Rajkumar played the lead role. Her first Telugu movie was Bharya Bhartalu, directed by K Pratyagatma. She acted with Krishna in Telugu movie Mayadari Malligadu and with NTR in Justice Chowdhary. Jayanthi’s Malayalam movies are Palattu Koman, Kattupookkal, Kaliyodam, Lakshaprabhu, Karutha Pournami, Vilakkappetta Kani. She was also in Hindi movies Teen Bahuraniyan and Tumse Achha Kaun Hai.

Prominent personalities of Sandalwood condoled Jayanthi’s death. “It is difficult to find such a gregarious actress. The Kannada movie industry has lost a great actress known for humility and performance,’’ said Doddanna, a veteran actor. Saroja Devi, a veteran of multilingual movies, said that Jayanthi had great friendships.

“Jayanthi was a gregarious person. She got very good roles in movies and earned name and fame for her performances,’’ Saroja Devi said. Actress-cum-politician Umashree described Jayanthi as an extraordinary actress.
