Sarfaraz Khan, joint commissioner at BBMP’s Solid Waste Management division said that the designs of these centres were finalised after consulting the stakeholders. “These centres will be much bigger than the ones that existed before. “There is a significant increase in the dry and wet waste collection ever since the new system of the door-to-door waste collection came into place. This has resulted in the reduction of mixed waste going to the landfills,” Nalini Shekar, co-founder of Hasiru Dala, said.

The NGOs have trained waste pickers to collect dry waste from houses, who are paid directly by the BBMP. The new model was introduced on an experimental basis.
