MANGALURU: A 31-year-old man wielding a machete ran riot at a training institute here on Monday, attacking three women staffers and leaving them with injuries on the head, hand and back.
The accused, identified as Naveen Shetty, works as a peon at Kundapur court complex and has been taken into custody. Police said Shetty gained access to the District Institute of Education and Training — next to the district jail, near Karangalpady — between 12.45 and 1pm, stating he’s an old student and wanted to present a gift to a lecturer.
The staff told Shetty that the lecturer he mentioned was not on the campus. Shetty, according to police, told them they “would always hide information” from him.
Black magic performed on me: Attacker
Suddenly, a visibly furious Shetty whipped out a machete from his bag and went on an attacking spree inside the DIET campus. Nirmala, a stenographer; Gunavathi, a Group ‘D’ worker; and Reena, a first-divisional assistant, received injuries in the attack and were rushed to a private hospital. Nirmala sustained injuries on the head and the other two on the face, back and hands.
Sources claimed Shetty had exhibited violent behavior earlier too and was reportedly under treatment. He reportedly picked up the machete from Kundapur, about 100km from here, in the morning.
During interrogation, Shetty reportedly told police that the teacher and a student had performed black magic on him. He returned to the campus on Monday to request the teacher to remove the effects of black magic. He turned angry when he was informed that the teacher was not on the campus, leading to the attack.
Mangaluru City police commissioner N Shashi Kumar visited the scene of crime and met the injured staff members at the hospital. “On hearing the women staffers scream, jail employees from the next building rushed to their rescue. The accused has since been taken to custody and is being interrogated,” Shashi Kumar. on his past
