Street sellers at the Jayanagar shopping complex have been driven out, and kiosks have been dismantled
On Tuesday, November 7, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) evicted unlicensed sellers and demolished kiosks on the walkway around the Jayanagar 4th Block shopping complex in Bengaluru.
The BBMP began the eviction drive in the morning, with heavy police protection and the use of earthmovers and other equipment. Around 150 unlicensed vendors were evicted, and kiosks selling fruits, garments, shoes, veggies, and other items were destroyed.
However, street merchants have agreed to wage an endless fight in front of the shopping complex beginning Wednesday, November 8. Swaminathan, a street vendor, told The Hindu, “I’ve been selling fruits and flowers on the street for 40 years.”
