In the wake of a kissing scandal, the mother of the Spanish football executive goes on strike
The “inhuman hunt” against her son has prompted Luis Rubiales’ mother to go on a hunger strike. Luis Rubiales is the president of the Spanish Football Federation. Following Spain’s victory in the Women’s World Cup final, Rubiales kissed Jenni Hermoso on the lips, and FIFA suspended him on Saturday. Hermoso had claimed that the kiss exchanged during the August 20 presenting ceremony wasn’t consenting.
On Monday, the heads of the regional soccer associations that comprise the Spanish federation joined in calling for the resignation of Luis Rubiales as director of soccer. FIFA, the governing body of soccer in the globe, had previously temporarily suspended him for 90 days after he made a speech defiantly refusing to resign.
The controversy surrounding the kiss has overshadowed Spain’s 1-0 triumph over England in the Women’s World Cup final. Rubiales refused to believe Jenni Hermoso when she insisted the kiss was not voluntary. The members of Spain’s national team announced last week that they would not take the field again unless Rubiales stepped own.
