Man caught smuggling out US dollars at Bengaluru airport | Bengaluru News

Bengaluru News: A 30-year-old man from Gujarat attempting to smuggle out the US $32,500 (worth nearly Rs 27 lakh) from Bengaluru to Bangkok was nabbed at Kempegowda International Airport (KIA).
A Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) team caught and handed him over to Bengaluru Customs.
Sources said the smuggling attempt unfolded on October 3, when the suspect, identified only as a native of Gujarat, arrived at KIA in the evening to board IndiGo airlines flight 6E 075 from Bengaluru to Bangkok. The team from the Bengaluru unit of the DRI reached the departure bay earlier following a specific tipoff that a male passenger was attempting to smuggle out large quantities of US dollars.
Following preliminary checks, investigators intercepted the man, and inspection of his handbag and check-in luggage revealed a large number of $100 bills meticulously concealed to avoid detection by authorities. The dollar bills totaling 32,500 and worth nearly Rs 27 lakh as per their market value were seized by the DRI team. The investigators arrested the smuggler and interrogated him on whether he was working at the behest of any gang based in Bengaluru
. Further probe is underway as DRI officials are looking to track down the key players in the case.
The Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of Bengaluru Customs has registered a case on the currency smuggling and arrest of the passenger, sources added.
Gold worth Rs 60 lakh seized from plane floor
Smuggled gold weighing 1.1kg and worth nearly Rs 60 lakh was unearthed from inside a plane floor that landed at KIA from Dubai on Friday night. The contraband included a rhodium-coated gold chain and another gold chain. DRI Bengaluru sources said that a passenger was intercepted and he allegedly led them to the two gold chains that were found on the aircraft’s floor.
