The BBMP plans to construct Indira Canteens at both airport terminals.
Breakfast will soon cost Rs 5 and lunch will cost Rs 10 at Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport (KIA), owing to the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), which has planned to open two Indira Canteens on airport grounds. A tender for these restaurants will be issued soon.
The state government, according to BBMP authorities, has agreed to raise the number of Indira Canteens from 199 to 250. The city has 225 wards, and the BBMP will establish one canteen in each. Another 25 canteens will be built in and around Bengaluru, in congested areas such as bus stops and general hospitals.
The canteens at the international airport will not only serve the airport’s employees but will also provide a cheaper food choice for taxi and bus drivers.
Exorbitantly priced food items on airport grounds are frequently chastised from many angles. Keeping this in mind, transport minister Ramalinga Reddy directed BBMP authorities in July to establish an Indira Canteen at KIA to provide affordable food to cab and bus drivers as well as members of the public.
“With the help of the Bengaluru Rural District Administration, we’ll set up a canteen at each of the two airport terminals,” KV Thrilok Chandra, special commissioner (health), BBMP.
