Huge amount of cash, jewellery seized ahead of K’taka elections
Ahead of the Assembly elections in the state, the police have seized a huge amount of cash and valuables across several districts, officials said on Thursday.
In Kalaburagi, around ₹1.9 crore of unaccounted cash was seized at check posts, out of which ₹0.4 crore was seized at Kinni Sadak check post and ₹50 lakhs at Jewargi check post, according to the police.
“Around ₹1.90 crore unaccounted cash seized at checkposts in Kalaburagi district out of which ₹1.40 crore seized at Kinni Sadak checkpost and ₹50 lakhs seized at Jewargi check post. Ahead of assembly elections in Karnataka, Kalaburagi district administration had set up 42 check posts in the district,” Kalaburagi deputy commissioner of police (DCP) Yeshwanth Gurukar said.
In Gadag, the police seized a huge amount of cash allegedly being transported to influence voters as well, police said.
On Wednesday, Betageri police seized ₹1.43 lakh from a car without proper documents. In another incident, the Gadag Town Police seized ₹15 lakh cash that was being illegally transported, officials said.
Meanwhile, in Belagavi, ₹9 lakh cash was seized at the Kanbargi check post on Wednesday, carried out without proper documentation, officials said, adding that the unaccounted cash was found when the car, which was going from Belagavi city towards Ankalgi and checked at the Kanbargi check post.
In Chikkamagaluru, the police seized valuables, including 9.3 kilograms of gold being carried from Chikkamagaluru towards Tarikere on March 22, Chikkamagaluru deputy commissioner K N Ramesh said on Thursday, adding that the administration seized valuables worth over ₹3 crore.
The district administration has established 18 checkpoints throughout the district.
The Assembly elections in the state are due by May.
