Karnataka Congress Divided Over DK Shivakumar’s Visit to Isha Yoga Centre

The political landscape in Karnataka is witnessing fresh turbulence following Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar’s visit to the Isha Yoga Centre in Tamil Nadu for Mahashivaratri celebrations. The visit has sparked a divide within the Karnataka Congress, with leaders taking opposing stances on the issue.

The Controversy Explained: DK Shivakumar’s Visit to Isha Yoga Centre

Shivakumar attended the Mahashivaratri event organized by spiritual leader Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev’s Isha Foundation. However, his presence at the event did not sit well with certain Congress leaders, particularly Cooperative Minister KN Rajanna, who raised concerns about Shivakumar sharing the stage with individuals critical of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.

Rajanna questioned the rationale behind attending an event hosted by someone who has publicly stated that he does not know Rahul Gandhi. “He (Shivakumar) knows better than me what people speak about our leader Rahul Gandhi in the Lok Sabha. Let him answer how justified it is to share a stage with such people,” Rajanna told reporters in Hassan.

Support from Within the Party

Despite the criticism, Shivakumar found support from his brother and former MP DK Suresh, who defended his actions. Suresh clarified that Shivakumar had always kept the party high command informed about his engagements.

“Whenever Shivakumar met Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he informed the party high command. He had even informed them about attending Isha Foundation’s Mahashivaratri event,” Suresh stated, dismissing allegations of political misalignment.

A Deeper Political Undertone?

This incident highlights the ideological rift within the Karnataka Congress, particularly regarding the party’s stance on spiritual and religious events associated with figures perceived to be close to the BJP. While Shivakumar’s visit could be seen as a personal or cultural engagement, Rajanna’s criticism suggests a deeper unease within Congress about aligning with figures like Sadhguru, who have often been seen as sympathetic to the ruling BJP.

Shivakumar’s Balancing Act

Shivakumar, who is also the Karnataka Congress president, has been navigating a tricky political landscape. His presence at the Isha Yoga Centre could be an attempt to balance his political responsibilities with personal beliefs. However, it has also exposed the underlying tensions within the party, especially regarding its relationship with spiritual figures and organizations.

As the debate continues, it remains to be seen whether this internal disagreement will escalate or if the Congress leadership will move swiftly to put an end to the controversy. For now, Shivakumar’s visit to Isha Yoga Centre has become more than just a religious affair—it has turned into a political talking point in Karnataka.
