Bengaluru’s QR Code Metro Ticketing System Reached 25 lakh Monthly Users in 2023

Bangalore, India’s innovation capital, has seen a surge in popularity for its QR code Metro ticketing system, with monthly usage reaching 25 lakh for the first time. The Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) records show a constant upward trend in QR code users, demonstrating significant adoption of the digital ticketing solution within a year of its inception.
Since its debut in November 2022, the QR code system has seen extraordinary development, with users expanding from 2.13 lakh at launch to 5 lakh in January 2023, 10 lakh in June 2023, and an amazing 25.9 lakh in December 2023.
The opening of Bengaluru’s whole 43-kilometer Purple Line in October 2023, which connects Whitefield in the east to Challaghatta in the west, has been critical to this growth. The enlarged Metro network not only increased daily ridership but also promoted the widespread use of QR code ticketing services.
BMRCL’s QR code ticketing system enables commuters to obtain single-trip tickets via a variety of channels, including WhatsApp, the Namma Metro smartphone app, Paytm, and Amazon, among others.
According to the latest data from BMRCL, 52 percent of daily passengers utilize smart cards, followed by tokens (34 percent) and QR codes (15 percent).
For smart card recharging, a majority of consumers (71.6 percent) rely on ticket counters at stations, followed by the Namma Metro app (13.28 percent), Paytm (8 percent), WhatsApp (3.25 percent), Amazon (2.23 percent), and the BMRCL website (1.6 percent).
