Bengaluru Metro Eyes ₹100 Crore Revenue from Rentals & Advertising

Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) is exploring new revenue streams beyond passenger fares as it faces opposition to a potential fare hike. The corporation has set an ambitious target of ₹100 crore annually through advertising, rentals, and branding partnerships.

Bengaluru Metro Diversifying Revenue Streams

Currently, non-fare revenue accounts for 7% of BMRCL’s total earnings. The plan is to increase this share to 10% by utilizing station spaces, train exteriors, and commercial rentals. Here’s how BMRCL intends to generate additional income:

  1. ₹30 crore from advertisements at metro stations.
  2. ₹30 crore from branding partnerships for partial company and brand naming rights at metro stations.
  3. ₹25 crore annually through train-based advertisements.
  4. ₹15 crore by renting out vacant spaces in metro stations for commercial use.

Advertising Without Affecting Aesthetics

Until now, BMRCL has been earning from advertising posters inside metro trains. To expand this, they plan to introduce advertisements on the exterior of about 10 metro coaches. However, officials assure that this will not compromise the aesthetics of the metro trains. The ads will be placed carefully, avoiding the window areas to maintain a clean and appealing look.

BMRCL has already reviewed similar advertising strategies in other metro systems across the country. Two agencies have been selected for the installation and maintenance of advertising spaces inside and outside metro coaches.

A Step Towards Sustainable Revenue

With increasing operational costs and resistance to fare hikes, BMRCL’s initiative to diversify revenue sources is a strategic move. By maximizing commercial potential without burdening passengers, the metro aims to ensure financial sustainability while maintaining affordability for commuters.
