In China After Massive Earthquake, Over 111 People Dead ( Northern Shaanxi Province )

According to official media, at least 111 people were killed when buildings in northwest China fell due to an earthquake, as rescue crews rushed to begin digging through rubble.
According to the regional earthquake relief offices, some 100 people were killed and dozens more were injured in Gansu province after the strong, shallow tremor occurred.
According to CCTV, 11 people were murdered and 100 were injured in Haidong, a city in the neighboring province of Qinghai.
According to Chinese news agency Xinhua, the quake caused extensive damage, including fallen houses, and sent residents fleeing onto the street for safety.
Rescue attempts began early Tuesday, with Chinese President Xi Jinping urging “all-out efforts” in the search and relief activities and safeguarding the protection of survivors and their property.
The US Geological Survey reported a magnitude 5.9 earthquake in Gansu, near the border with Qinghai, where Haidong is located.

This epicenter lies around 100 kilometers (60 miles) southwest of Lanzhou, the capital of Gansu province. Following the first earthquake, there were several lesser aftershocks.
The quake’s magnitude, which was felt in Xi’an, northern Shaanxi province, some 570 kilometers (350 miles) away, was given by Xinhua as 6.2.

CCTV footage showed emergency vehicles speeding towards the site, their lights flashing along snow-covered roadways.
