Mini Bus Collides with Stationary IndiGo Aircraft at Bengaluru Airport – No Injuries Reported
In a rare but concerning incident, a mini bus operated by a third-party ground handling agency collided with a parked IndiGo aircraft at Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) in Bengaluru on the afternoon of April 18. The incident occurred around 12:15 PM and, thankfully, no injuries were reported.
The aircraft involved in the mishap was not in service at the time. According to a statement released by Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL), the bus hit the undercarriage of the stationary aircraft, officially classified as an Aircraft On Ground (AOG). The term refers to aircraft that are not currently operational due to maintenance or other reasons.
Airport officials acted swiftly following the incident, initiating standard safety protocols and involving all relevant agencies to ensure thorough inspection and risk management. “We have followed all necessary protocols in close coordination with our stakeholders. The safety and well-being of passengers, airline partners, and airport personnel continues to be our top priority,” said a BIAL spokesperson.
The incident did not affect any scheduled flights or passenger operations. The quick response by airport authorities ensured that the situation was brought under control without further disruption.
IndiGo Airlines, India’s largest airline by market share, acknowledged the accident and emphasized its commitment to safety. “We are aware of a ground-related incident at Bengaluru airport involving one of our parked aircraft and a vehicle operated by a third-party agency. An internal inquiry is underway, and appropriate action will be taken based on the findings,” the airline said in its official communication.
While such incidents are rare, they serve as a reminder of the importance of strict safety and coordination protocols within airport premises. Ground handling operations, though often behind the scenes, play a critical role in maintaining the smooth functioning of airport logistics and safety.
The ongoing investigation will focus on determining whether the incident was due to human error, technical failure, or a lapse in communication between ground staff and the control room.
Though no one was harmed and flight operations were unaffected, the collision underscores the need for continued vigilance and rigorous training in ground operations at busy international airports like Bengaluru. Stakeholders await the outcome of the internal inquiry, which will likely lead to enhanced guidelines to prevent similar incidents in the future.
