Earthquake Today: Tremors Felt in Jammu, Srinagar, Punjab, and Pakistan as 5.8 Magnitude Quake Strikes Afghanistan

Earthquake today: Tremors were felt across parts of North India and Pakistan on Saturday morning after a strong earthquake struck the Afghanistan-Tajikistan border region. According to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the earthquake measured 5.8 in magnitude and occurred at 11:47 AM (IST). The epicentre was located near the remote Afghanistan-Tajikistan border at a depth of 94 kilometres.

In India, mild to moderate tremors were reported in Jammu, Srinagar, parts of Punjab, and Delhi-NCR. People in these areas stepped out of their homes and buildings as precautionary measures. However, there have been no immediate reports of any structural damage or casualties from the Indian side.

The tremors were felt widely across Pakistan as well. According to media reports from Pakistan, the earthquake was experienced in major cities including Islamabad, Lahore, Peshawar, and Gilgit, as well as in smaller towns such as Mardan, Kohat, Lower Dir, Mansehra, Haripur, Abbottabad, Swabi, Swat, Sargodha, Chiniot, and Kotli in Azad Kashmir. Several cities in Punjab province including Sheikhupura, Okara, Sahiwal, Pindi Bhattian, and Toba Tek Singh also experienced the tremors. Thankfully, no casualties or property loss have been reported so far.

This is the second earthquake in the region within a week, raising concerns about seismic activity in the area. Just last Saturday, a 5.5 magnitude quake had shaken parts of Pakistan’s capital and several areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab provinces.

Pakistan lies in an active seismic zone and frequently experiences earthquakes of varying intensities. The region has a history of devastating quakes, the deadliest being in 2005, which claimed more than 74,000 lives, mostly in the northern parts of the country and in Pakistan-administered Kashmir.

Seismologists continue to monitor the situation, but stress that such tremors are common in the tectonically active region stretching from Afghanistan to northern India. Citizens in affected areas are advised to remain cautious and follow earthquake safety protocols.

As updates come in, the earthquake today serves as another reminder of the region’s vulnerability to seismic activity and the importance of disaster preparedness.
